Hypertension - A silent Killer Let’s Conquer It through Ayurveda


Hypertension
The World Health Organization attributes hypertension, or high blood pressure, as the leading cause of cardiovascular mortality. It is estimated that elevated BP causes almost 50% of cardiovascular deaths in both developed and developing countries prevalence of HT is increasing rapidly among Indian Urban Populations and using the current definitions more than two fifths of adult Indian population has hypertension. Better control can lead to prevention of 300,000 to 1.5 million annual deaths from cardiovascular diseases in India.

Average blood pressure range in a normal individual is 90-119/60-79. It is considered high it is consistently over 140/90. Blood pressure is between 120-139/80-89 on multiple readings is considered Pre-hypertension. If you have pre-hypertension, you are more likely to develop high blood pressure.

Cause: Blood pressure measurements are the result of the force of the blood produced by the heart and size and condition of the arteries.

Many factors can affect blood pressure, including:

  • How much water and salt you have in your body
  • The condition of your kidneys, nervous system, or blood vessels.
  • The levels of different body hormones


Smoking, obesity and diabetes are all risk factors for hypertension.

Symptoms: most of the time, there are no symptoms, hence it is called silent killer. Symptoms that may occur include:
  • Chest pain
  • Confusion
  • Ear noise or buzzing
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Nosebleed
  • Tiredness
  • vision changes

Warning signs: If you have a severe headache or any of the symptoms above see your doctor right away. These may be signs of a complication or dangerously high blood pressure called malignant hypertension.

Persistent hypertension is one of the risk factors for strokes, heart attacks, heart failure, and is leading cause of chronic kidney failure.



Ayurveda propounds: Hypertension can be influenced by many factors, such as Diet, Digestion, Accumulation of Toxins, Stress and Exercise Levels & Daily Routine that
Affect levels of doshas (vata, pitta, kapha). Creating a healthy balance in theses bioenergetics forces (doshas) is the basis of treatment.

  • Loose weight if you are overweight. Excess weight adds to strain on the heart.
  • Exerices regularly
  • Eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and low fat daily products while reducing total and saturated fat intake.


  • Avoid smoking and alcohol intake.
  • Try manage your stress-following the Concept of Adharaniya and Dharaniya Vega’s, Breathing Exercises (Pranayama), Achara Rasayanam are advocated in Ayurveda to maintain Perfect Mental Health.
  • Transcendental Meditation also helps in combating the Life Threatening Menace called Stress.
  • Detocification Procedures of Panchkarma Chikitsa plays a tival role in eliminating the toxins from the body and thus enliven the body’s natural healing and self-repair ability not only to help cure Hypertension, but also to prevent and disorder in the body and thus create the highest state of Health and Well-being.


Some Home Remedies:

  • Mix juice of onion and pure honey in equal quantity. Take two spoons of this mixture once a day, for about a week. Upon noticing improvement, take for few more days as needed.
  • Take four leaves of Basil and two leaves of Neem(margosa) and grind them with four spoons of water. Take this ground mixture empty stomach with a glass of water.
  • Eat empty stomach on Papita(Papaya) everyday for one month. Do not take anything after this for at least two hours.
  • Pour almond oil (5drops) in each nostril is good for high blood pressure.

Other recommendations are as follows here:-


  • Adults over 18 should have their blood pressure checked routinely.
  • Blood pressure at all ages should be kept below 140/90.
  • Treatment for hypertension must begin early to prevent organ damage – whatever be your age.
  • If you have diabetes, keep your blood sugar under control.
  • In persons with diabetes, blood pressure should be kept below 130/85, and in those with kidney failure and heart failure, at the lowest level possible.

The concept of agni is unique to Ayurveda- maharishi Ayurveda Hospital

The concept of agni is unique to Ayurveda.

Most simply put, Agni is a digestive fire or a transforming power to convert what isn't you i.e., food, drinks, sights, sounds, feelings and information into what is you - your body, emotions and intelligence.

It is the Agni that has the power to digest the food well; making all nutrients available to the tissues. It is the agni that powers the mind to be intelligently disciplined. It is Agni that cleans toxins and waste products from the system, keeping the digestive tract clean and the body fresh and glowing. Strong healing Agni is necessary to keep the body and mind balanced and to maintain good health.
Problems come to the surface when Agni is low or too high. Low Agni will be the cause of poor digestion of food that we eat. Very strong or high levels of Agni will literally burn the food up even before it can be assimilated and utilized.

Low Agni is generally expressed as: Gas, Burps, Difficulty in waking up, Slow digestion (Heaviness after meals), Scanty or no Perspiration, Tired mind, Constipation, Dull complexion.

High levels of Agni are generally expressed as: Strong belching, Excessive talking, Rashes, Diarrhea, Burning sensation in the digestive tract, Hyper excitability, Excessive Anger.

Tips for improving Low Agni:
  • ·   Consume light and easily digestible food in small quantities, like, Ayurvedic Khichdi, Moong Dal & fresh green vegetables.

  • · Take a pinch of finely chopped fresh ginger mixed with a little salt before meals (Especially recommended for Vata types)

  • · Take a pinch of trikatu powder with quarter teaspoon of honey before meals (Especially recommended for Kapha types)

  • ·    Sip warm water along with your meals.

  • ·  Agni can be improved by fasting but this should be done under supervision of an experienced Ayurvedic physician only.

  • ·    Agni can also be improved with the help of some Ayurvedic medicines.


Tips for reducing and normalizing High Agni:
  • ·         Avoid hot energy foods like chilies, coffee, eggs, alcohol etc.
  • ·         Eat in a settled and calm atmosphere with an attitude of gratitude for the food.
  • ·         Breakfast should not be skipped and it is better to take an early lunch.
  • ·         Plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables should be taken. Coconut is a good option.
  • ·         Find ways to release your anger, frustrations and stress in constructive ways.
  • ·         Regular practice of Transcendental Meditation is very helpful.
  • ·         Sip Maharishi Ayurveda Pitta Tea after your meals to reduce excess agni.
