Ayurvedic treatment & medicine for Diabetes

Ancient scholars of Ayurveda knew Diabetes mellitus some 3,000 years ago.  The association of frequent urination with a sweet substance in the urine was first reported in Charak Sanhita the ancient Ayurvedic texts.

Ayurveda recognizes this disease right from the Vedic period with the name Prameha. The word prameha denoted prabhuta mootrata (excessive urination) and aavila mootrata (turbid urine) and Madhumeha means the flow of madhu (sugar) from the body. Ayurveda classics advocates two different types of therapy schedules for diabetes as listed below:

·        Apatarpana (De-Nourishment) And Samshodhana (Cleansing)

This Ayurvedic treatment of Diabetes is prescribed if you are obese and have heavy built. Maximum importance is given on de-nourishment of fats and elimination of endo- toxins by the way of various exercises, fasting and panchkarma like emesis, purgation, enema and blood-letting.

·        Santarpana (Replenishment) And Brumhana (Body Bulk Promotion)

This is prescribed if you are chronically ill with low immunity are underweight.  This therapy helps in providing the easily acceptable nutrient and micro nutrients to rebuild body tissues and help strength the defense mechanism without increasing blood sugar, fats and other metabolism.

There are foods which have a specific role in the treatment of diabetes.

·        Fenugreek seeds (Methi)
·        Bitter gourd (Karela)
·        Jambul fruit (Jamun)
·        Bael
·        Onion
·        Garlic
·        Aloe
·        Custard apple leaves
·        Neem leaves
·        Cabbage
·        Turmeric

Self help Guidence & Ayurvedic Remedies

1.     Preparation decoction by adding terminalia chebula (harad), nagarmortha, pathanlodhra bark in boiling water and take intermany 40 ml twice daily.

2.     Decoctions by boiling rakta-chandan, terminalia arjun bark and deradur bark 40ml twice daily.

3.     Fresh juices of whole plants of tinospora cordifolica (giloy) along with honey also are taken.

4.     Triphala, Shiljeet & Loha bhasam mixture good for diabetic.

5.     Triphala,daruhaldi decoction 30ml perday

6.     Leaves of gudmaas, leaves of tej patta, methi, karela good for diabetes

7.     The herbs-minerals preparation like Shilajeetyadi Vati, Basant Kusmakar Ras, Gokshuradi Guggulu can be take after consulting physician.

8.     Juices of bitter gourd (karela) or Rose apple (Jamun) of two tends leaves of Bilva & Neem may be taken on empty stomach daily, juice of Jamun should be taken once 25ml twice daily.

9.     Take twice daily with powder of rose apple stones (powder of jammun ki guthali).


·        Eliminate all objects that contain sugar from diet like wheat, rice, potato, sugarcane juice, jiggery, sweet fruits.
·         Reduce Fats especially butter 7 ghee from diet but may be taken as and when needed.  Take karela in any form without any fear and Jamun powder of its stone.
·        Take plenty of green vegetables, black gram, soya etc.

·        Resort to morning and evening walk pranayam and perform ardha-natsayendra asana, Bhujangasan, Dhanurasan helpful, but it should be performed under supervision of a yoga expert.

Eye Care with Panchkarma - Ayurveda Treatments

Eyes, being the most important organ in our body need a special care. Specially, in this running lifestyle where we are working al days long and majorly we are straining our eyes by working a lot on computers and other electronic gadgets, our eye needs rest, care and some detoxification and lubrication time to time.

Along with several eye exercises, Ayurveda recommends one of the most effective treatments (Eye Care with Panchkarma) which is called as Netra Tarpana.

Netra means eyes and Tarpana means nourishment so this is a treatment where nourishment of eyes is done. This nourishment is in turn to providing lubrication to eye muscles and optic nerve with the help of medicated ghee.

In this process, a special type of wall is built around eyes with dough of  Urad flour. And then medicated ghee is poured on eyes and then the eyes are blinked. The person is made to lie on the droni, the dough which is prepared by using prescribed gram flour is placed around both the eyes and precautions are taken so that the medicated ghee does not spill from the dough which is placed around the eyes.

Then the Luke warm medicated gritha is poured in to it, and made to stay for at least 5 min, then squeezed out and replaced with warm medicated ghee.
This procedure is performed for 20 to 25 minutes.
